Lake Viedma (Chalten, Argentina)
Founded by Finn Alfred Ramstrom as an estancia in 1917, this remote property (the gravel access road alone is 75km) is in a beautiful setting sheltered from the fierce glacial winds by knarled sequoias. Power is provided by a hydraulic turbine.
There are various trails, some quite challenging, for both walking and riding, into the Los Glaciares national park which today totally surrounds the property. More extensive riding is available on the neighbouring (working) estancia. Boat trips to the Viedma glacier occasionally run (subject to wind and fuel).
There are 9 comfortable rooms, all with private bathrooms.
A very special country hotel, with friendly staff. Stay several nights to make the journey worthwhile.
Open all year, but most visited from November to April.
