South of Salta: Cachi and Cafayate
To the south of Salta the Calchaquiés Valley offers more dramatic scenery with pretty towns and high-altitude vineyards. One can visit Cafayate (many vineyards), Cachi and Molinos, with beautiful landscapes and cactus deserts.

Inn/Posada - CachiA small colonial inn with a welcoming, cosy sitting area on entry. Staff are very friendly and the restaurant serves good food.
Estancia Colome
Country hotel - Above MolinosA 39,000ha estate owned by the Hess family, who have built this spa/resort from scratch with no expense spared. There is a large pool and restaurant. There is a separate area for wine tastings and more informal lunches, and a small art museum.
Hotel Killa
Inn/Posada - CafayateA small hotel with tons of character and a pretty, well maintained back garden with swimming pool. It has a relaxed atmosphere and there are homely touches everywhere. The continental breakfast is excellent and the staff are very helpful and friendly. There is also a car park on the same road.
La Merced del Alto
Country hotel - Just outside CachiAn imposing, estancia-style hotel just outside Cachi built in spacious grounds with commanding views of the distant mountains. There are large communal areas which have been tastefully designed and a formal restaurant. Outside, an impressive patio leads down to a modern pool and an annex housing their spa.
Patios de Cafayate
Country hotel - Outskirts of CafayateA lovely hotel in the heart of the Calchaquíes valley with spectacular views of the vineyards belonging to El Esteco winery (next door) and the mountains. The communal areas and rooms are set around 4 courtyards, all individually named. Many original features have been maintained throughout the hotel, it is traditionally furnished and has a restaurant, wine cellar, tasting room, lovely gardens and an outdoor pool.
Viñas de Cafayate
Country hotel - Just outside CafayateOn the outskirts of town, Viñas de Cafayate is a modest, mock hacienda set at the foot of a hill surrounded by vineyards. The rooms are set around two courtyards, the gardens are well kept and there is a lovely outdoor pool. There is a restaurant, wine tasting is offered and a complimentary glass of wine is available to all guests in the sitting room each evening.
