Chile/Argentina - La Serena, Elqui Valley and wine regions
An unusual trip from the northern Pacific coast through the magical Elqui Valley, famous for the clearest skies in the southern hemisphere, and on to the wine regions.
La Serena and the Elqui valley
Days 1-4: Fly north from Santiago to La Serena, where you will be met and driven to Hacienda Los Andes, a restored colonial farm on the Rio Hurtado. 3 nights gives you time for some lovely rides and walks which take you from green valleys up into arid mountains. Continue to the colonial town of Vicuña where you will have a guided visit to the Mamalluca observatory and spend a night at the Hotel Halley.
Santiago
Days 5-10: Driven down the Elqui valley to the airport and fly to Santiago. Collect a hire car and drive south to the Hotel Santa Cruz for 3 nights, a perfect base for exploring the area and visiting local vineyards. The town’s excellent museum is next to the hotel. Continue on to the Casa Real for 2 nights. Drive back to Santiago and the extremely comfortable and stylish Hotel Ritz Carlton for a night.
Mendoza
Days 11-15: Collected and driven (5-6 hours) across the Andes to Mendoza. This spectacular journey takes you through amazing landscapes, and close to the highest peak in the Americas, Aconcagua. After a night at the Hotel Park Hyatt, in a leafy square in Mendoza, you are driven to Chateau D’Ancon for 3 nights. Driven back to Mendoza for onward connections.
