Peru holidays : introduction

Peru is a diverse, unique and fascinating country. Witness to the rise and fall of ancient cultures and empires that left their mark on the landscape, this Andean country is endowed with an extraordinary richness in natural beauty. While first time visitors cannot miss the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, the rest of the country offers everything from trekking and rafting to the enigmatic coastal cultures of the Moche and the mysterious Nasca lines.

It is easy to combine visits to Peru with Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador and the Galapagos, and Venezuela.

Climate and when to go

April to October is the dry season in the mountains, with hot days and cold nights, and is the best time to visit, especially if you are hiking. In the Amazon it is humid and hot year-round, with particularly frequent rainfall between November and April. On the coast summer lasts from December to April with hot dry conditions and temperatures between 25 and 35°C. Between May and November the southern coast suffers from the garua, a blanket of sea-mist.

“Peru knocked our socks off. Peruvians truly welcome visitors and their attitude makes you warm to them immediately. Macchu Picchu should be the pinnacle of any list but sitting on a reed island in Lake Titicaca talking with the family whose home it was had a special quality.” - MMM

“Well you know about the Galapagos which was wonderful. Our journey through Peru was great. Your arrangements were fabulous. Always good guides to meet us and show us around. The condors were flying and Machu Picchu was spectacular, of course. We loved Ollantaytambo. We also loved the Inkaterra at Aguas Calientes.” - AM

“Many, many thanks. We had a trip of a lifetime, have loads of memories and great pictures plus new friends from Canada, US and Peru! Mountain Lodges of Peru can't be beaten - fantastic accomodation, food and staff...not to mention our wonderful guide, who was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and charming. At no time did we feel unsafe, unsure or uncomfortable!” - CM

“We're just finishing our trip on the Delfin. We've had a fantastic time throughout Peru, so thanks for all your help in putting it together. Highlights were, of course, Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail, Huchuy Qosqo (although we found it much tougher than "moderate") and we have, of course been kingly assisted on the Delfin - the food has been absolutely outstanding! Thanks again for all your advice.” - MS
