Peru - The Sacred Valley and trek to Sun Temple

An excellent alternative to the popular and traditional Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Lima

Day 1: A night in Lima at the Hotel José Antonio Executive, a good 4-star hotel in Miraflores.

Cusco

Days 2-4: Fly to Cusco for 3 nights at Hostal Los Apus, a small, characterful hotel in the pretty San Blas district. Explore the markets and nearby ruins of Sacsayhuaman.

The Inca Trails

Days 5-9: Early morning drive from Cusco to Quillarumi Inca shrine where you will see fine exmples of carved rock huacas. Begin the trail above the west bank of Huaracondo River and visit the pre-Inca fortress of Huatta before lunch. Continue westward to camp in the hamlet of Chiripathua. The following morning climb up to Accoccasa Pass (4,625m) before descending to camp in the broad valley of Chancahuco (4,350m). From camp, follow the contours of a now-abandoned Inca aqueduct to reach Huayrapunku Inca shrine (Gate of the wind). Descend to camp on a broad terrace atthe edge of Cachiqata quarry. After exploring the quarry, descend for a final day's hiking and cross the river to reach the Sun Temple in Ollantaytambo. Catch the late afternoon train to Aguas Calientes where you will overnight before a morning visit around the magical site of Machu Picchu. Return to Cusco by train in the late afternoon.

Cusco

Day 10: Fly to Lima in time for international connections.
