Riding in the Cordoba hills from Estancia Los Potreros

A weeks riding from Los Potreros, a 6,000 acre working cattle farm that has remained in the same Anglo-Argentine family for four generations. Lovely horses, excellent hospitality and food and the opportunity to play polo.

Córdoba

Day 1: Met at Cordoba airport and driven, about 1 hour, to Los Potreros. Wonderful welcome on arrival and, time allowing, introductory ride to get used to the horses and tack.

Days 2-7: The Estancia is very secluded on the top of the Sierras Chicas at an altitude of 3,000 feet (910m). Riding is the main activity, the horses are well-mannered, responsive and sure-footed and there are approximately 140 in total (80 of which are broken), suitable for both beginners and experienced riders. They are a mixture of Polo ponies, Criollo, Peruvian Paso and also some crossbreeds.

There is no set itinerary for the rides. There are numerous half day rides visiting fabulous high points with far reaching views across the pampas, trekking along streams to nearby waterfalls for swimming and visiting Potrero de Niz for more family history. On longer rides you can explore Candongas C16 church, or the Dominican church with a visit to the local single-teacher school. You will also have the opportunity to spend the morning helping the gauchos work cattle. The amount and type of cattle work will depend on the season: rounding up, herding and branding.

Polo is also offered and guaranteed if you are staying a minimum of 5 nights, though always weather permitting. It’s great fun and an asado lunch will be cooked down by the pitch.

Walking, painting, birdwatching, golf (there are three 18 hole golf courses within 35km of the estancia), wine tasting and visits to local churches can all be organised too.

Day 8: Driven back to Cordoba airport for onward flight connections.
