Falkland Islands in depth and the mountains of the Cajon de Maipo
A two week visit of the Falkland Islands, taking in the islands of both West and East Falkland as well as stay in the capital, Stanley. Time is also spent in the beautiful Cajon de Maipo just a few hours from the hustle and bustle of Santiago de Chile and a final night in Santiago in one of its finest hotels.
Central Andes
Days 1-2: Fly to Santiago and head straight out to the beautiful hills of the Cajon de Maipo. Stay two nights at the Lodge Andino where you will be well looked after and treated to some culinary delights by chef Pedro. You have a whole day to make most of the excursions on offer and enjoy the magnificent views.
Santiago
Day 3: Return to Santiago for an overnight stay in an airport hotel ready for your early morning flight to Punta Arenas and on to the Falkland Islands.
Saunders Island
Days 4-7: Arrival at Mount Pleasant International airport and connect with the small 10-seater FIGAS (Falkland Island Government Air Service) flight to Saunders Island, West Falkland. You will be met by Suzan and David and transfer overland about one hour to The Neck. This self-catering unit will be your home for the next 4 nights. Food packages will be sent with you so you will be free to enjoy your time with the penguins. You might be able to arrange a pick up from The Rookery over the other side of the island, and spend time with the black-browed albatross there.
Carcass Island
Days 8-10: Flight to Carcass Island, West Falkland with FIGAS. The island is beautiful, with a high ridge and many areas to explore. Stay at the homestead where you will be well looked-after. Explore the island on foot to visit the gentoo penguin colony and also the elephant seals near the airstrip. A full day boat excursion will take you across to West Point Island, where you will have a chance to see the black-browed albatross and hopefully dolphins and whales from the boat.
Pebble Island
Days 11-12: Board another FIGAS flight to Pebble Island, West Falkland. Stay at the lodge which was the original farmhouse. You can arrange visits to the wildlife spots on this 24 mile long island at extra charge, or can arrange to be dropped off at sites and do a bit of walking. Pebble Island is home to many water and shore birds and has Gentoo, Magellanic and Rockhopper penguins.
Bleaker and Sea Lion Islands
Days 13-15: FIGAS flight to East Falkland and Bleaker Island. Stay at Cobb’s Cottage self catering unit for a 3 nights (food packages will be sent for you) and you will be free to explore this small island at our leisure. There is a large colony of Rockhopper penguins on the island (as well as magellanic and gentoo).
Stanley
Days 16-17: Take the short flight to Stanley where you spend two nights at the Malvina House Hotel. Stanley is a small town, easily explored on foot, and a visit to the museum is worthwhile. You will have a full day excursion out to Volunteer point with its many king penguins.
Santiago
Days 18-19: Transfer to Mount Pleasant International airport for the Lan flight to Santiago (via Punta Arenas). Overnight at Santiago’s only boutique hotel in the delightful Bellavista district with many a restaurant to chose from. Spend the following morning enjoying the city before taking the evening flight home.
