Peru - a gastronomic tour of the Inca heartland
A classic tour of Peru focusing on the wonderful and varied gastronomy of each area, a treat for all your senses!
Lima
Days 1-2: Arrive in Lima and spend 2 nights at the Lima Country Club. Take a gastronomic tour of the city and learn how to prepare a number of classic Peruvian dishes such as "cebiche". Enjoy Dinner at the Malabar restaurant run by Pedro Miguel Schiaffino who has developed an eclectic fusion of Peruvian, Italian, and Cuban food.
Sacred Valley
Days 3-4: Fly to Cusco and driven into the picturesque Sacred Valley, at a lower altitude and ideal for acclimatising. Stay at the Hotel Sol y Luna and visit Pisac market, the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo and enjoy lunch at a traditional Hacienda, whose owners will prepare family recipes with home-grown produce using classic highland ingredients of maize, quinoa and potatoes among others. The following day, you visit the the enigmatic pre-Inca site of Moray, and the spectacular Maras salt pans.
Machu Picchu
Day 5: All aboard the Orient Express run Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu with sumptuous carriages modelled in the style of the classic 1920s' Pullman trains. Enjoy fine dining before you arrive at Aguas Calientes for a tour of the magnificent site of Machu Picchu. Overnight at the Inkaterra Machu Picchu.
Cusco
Days 6-8: Morning free to explore independently before you return to Cusco in the evening on the Hiram Bingham enjoying a gourmet dinner and stay three nights at the Casa Andina Private Collection. Enjoy a city tour to the city's most important sites including lunch at the Map Cafe serving creative contemporary Peruvian cuisine known as "Novo Andino". You have a free day with dinner at the La Cicciolina offering a fusion of Peruvian/ Mediterranean food.
Lake Titicaca
Days 9-11: Take the classic Andean Explorer train to Puno and stay 1 night at the Libertador Isla Esteves. The following day visit the floating reed islands of Uros and Taquile and overnight with a local family in Amantani to experience traditional highland food (with perhaps the chance to sample the local delicacy guinea pig!). Return to the Libertador Isla Esteves for a night.
Lima
Day 12: Take a flight back to Lima and enjoy a guided tour of Peru's historic capital before you are driven back to the airport for onward connections.
